In the 20 th century, the world managed to establish 87 democracies. Democracy was perceived as the way forward to govern a country. However, in the 21 st century the number of democracies suddenly stopped, and even reversed.Due to globalization, increased nationalism and increasing conflicts, there are high changes that democracy will continue to decline. And alternatives solutions will replace democracy. Future success stories might be the only thing to change this prospect. Ultimately, this might lead to failure of international organizations like the UN and alike. Therefore, collaboration with governments and bilateral organizations around the globe will reduce and problems related to quality of life, including the provision of water and wastewater management, will be managed from a nationalist point of view. Entering and serving emerging markets will be increasingly difficult, since national governments will increasingly protect their own interests.
